I have been told by friends in the know that the snake in my yard was, in fact, a large gopher snake. And, in my defense, that gopher snakes will beat their tails against the ground so fast that it sounds like a rattle, they will open their mouths and hiss and sometimes puff up their 'cheeks' so as to appear like they have venom sacks.
